Bournville: A Walk Down Memory Lane
On Sunday December 3rd, the 'Chocolate Houses' research team hosted a memories event at the For All Heathly Living Centre on the Bournville Estate in Weston super Mare.
Our team of enthusiastic young people have been working with our heritage consultant, Tamsin Mosse, to research the local area and interview local people with stories to share. Developing their interview skills, the team started by interviewing Cllr Ian Parker who visited Weston Youth Centre to talk about his memories and experiences.
After getting very positive feedback from the Ian Parker about their interviewing technique, the team were raring to go for the memories event. Many local people were invited to attend and asked to bring an item of memoribilla to share and discuss.
The event started with a short introduction to the project and the young people explaining what they had discovered so far. After the team conveyed their findings, the attendees were invited to enjoy refreshments whilst talking to each other about their memories of growing up on the estate, events that had taken place, memorable characters and how the estate has changed over time.
The young people were then able to circulate the room and interview everyone that attended to collect stories and start to create a timeline of events to present to the production team in the new year.
The event was a success with the team able to learn so much more about the local community and its beginnings. The local newspaper, The Weston Mercury visited the event to help spread the word - read their story here.
The next steps are for the team to start sharing their research with the professional film-makers and get the wheels in motion for the documentary to take shape.
