THe COURSE

Develop technical art skills in game technologies to prepare for many careers within the creative industries.

We adopt an applied approach to help you build a deep understanding of the contexts, tools, and workflows that underpin the production of compelling assets for games, virtual production and extended reality (XR) applications. You’ll be guided by experienced teaching staff and industry professionals with real-world experience of workflow planning, character creation, environment design and more.

Designed with insight from industry, this course supports the development of professional skills through live briefs delivered by real clients. We’ll help get you ready for a career as a creative, technical professional with critical knowledge of game art and virtual production techniques. Beyond this, you'll build the communication and co-creation skills that industry expects.

THE team

MODULES

Explore the critical roles of a technical game artist. Our modules are designed to give you a solid understanding of the foundations of 3D asset creation, real-time games technologies, professional collaboration, virtual production, procedural methodologies and mixed reality development. There are no exams. You'll be assessed on your creativity and process, and given the freedom to experiment and space to create.

Modules are subject to change in response to feedback from students and developments in industry. Applicants will be advised of  significant changes to the advertised programme.
Where can this course take you?

Game Art graduates have many career options both within and outside of recreational games. Popular roles include Environment Artist, Procedural Technical Artist, Mixed Reality Producer, and Virtual Production Technician.

LOCATIONS

The Games Academy utilises specialised game studios located at Tobacco Factory and boomsatsuma Studios. With access to capable PCs, XR devices, motion capture and virtual production technologies, you'll have everything you need to bring your game ideas to life.

Projects

Brighton Pier Reclaimed

Alex Morgan-Smith

An interpretation of Brighton Palace Pier as a place long abandoned and reclaimed by nature. Created in Unreal 5 and related technologies for the final year module, Devised Project.

Retro Workspace

Mia Tyler

Mia walks us through her process to create a retro workspace using Blender. This work was presented as part of the year 1 module, Environment Art.

Bad Robot

Ethan Kabot

A series of renders of an original robot concept, modelled and textured in Maya for the first year module, 3D Character Art. Ethan aims for a cartoon-like aesthetic with intentionally low resolution facial details that represent an old TV.

Satsuma Rush

Collaborative

This animation, about two satsumas, was created for a music video project. Game Art students and staff came together to build a custom set of 3D, lighting, and tracking tools for use in both this project and future works.

Animation Experiments

Mia Tyler

Made in Blender, these skills experiments utilise techniques such as inverse kinematics, forward kinematics, time remapping, projectile simulation and hair/fur simulation.

Post-Apocalyptic Environment

Abraham Fernandez

Abraham's 3D environment is inspired by the video games DayZ and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. These renders was created using Maya and Unreal Engine for the first year module, Environment Art.
