Six-week Studio and Darkroom Residencies.

RESIDENT: boomsatsuma Photography School Bristol are offering six, six-week studio and darkroom residencies at Tobacco Factory.


If you are a photographer, artist or curator working with all lens-based media, who is based in the South West, you can apply for a six-week studio and darkroom residency with boomsatsuma Photography School Bristol, in its new facility at Tobacco Factory. 


The six available residencies, which will run consecutively in term-time between 20 September 2021 and 17 July 2022, giving you the space, freedom and resources to develop new, or consolidate ongoing, work; with the opportunity for exhibition at the new boomsatsuma gallery at Tobacco Factory.


You will be supported by teaching staff and given access to the darkroom, studio, library, software, lectures, screenings and workshops. In residency with students and faculty at boomsatsuma, you will also teach on one of the BA (Hons) Documentary Photography and Print block weeks, providing an opportunity to workshop areas of interest with students.

Residency Dates:


Residency 1: 20th September - 31st October 

Residency 2: 1st November - 12th December 

Residency 3: 3rd January - 13th February 

Residency 4: 28th February - 10th April 

Residency 5: 25th April - 5th June 

Residency 6: 6th June - 17th July 


General conditions for residencies at boomsatsuma:


Successful applicants must:


  • agree to produce a minimum of 1 piece of content for boomsatsuma’s forthcoming magazine SHAPES, website and socials over the duration of the residency

  • teach 5 x half-days onto one of the BA (Hons) Documentary Photography and Print block weeks, with boomsatsuma teaching staff 

  • be based in the South West due to current Covid-19 restrictions.


Block Weeks:


You must be available to support the delivery of a block week workshop between 9am-12.30pm on the following dates:


Residency 1: 20th-24th September

Residency 2: 13th-17th December

Residency 3: 3rd-7th January

Residency 4: 4th-8th April

Residency 5: 30th May-3rd June

Residency 6: 6th-10th June

Tobacco Factory is an 18th Century building and there are a number of steps up to boomsatsuma studios, darkroom and library. Application Process:


The selection panel will be composed of representatives of the boomsatsuma college of teachers. We will assess all applications using the following set of criteria:


  • the potential for the award to impact on the applicant’s creative development

  • the quality of the applicant’s creative work

  • the viability of the proposal as a project to be carried out with support from boomsatsuma.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates that identify as Black or People of Colour.

  • Artists CV containing contact details. No more than 1 page of A4.

  • Short statement of no more than 300 words about your work.

  • Summary of no more than 300 words explaining how the opportunity will benefit your practice.

  • Summary of no more than 300 words explaining what you would like to workshop with students over a 5 day period.

  • A maximum of 5 images of your work or Vimeo links. Including title and year of completion.

  • Which residency you are applying for (you may apply for all six if you are available).
