An Introduction.

The 50 biggest box office movies of all time rely on visual effects and animation to tell their stories, with the UK leading the way for innovation. Yet, alongside the rapid growth of the VFX sector in recent years comes unprecedented demand for new talent. For dedicated people with an eye for detail, excellent problem solving skills and applied knowledge of contemporary techniques, there are unique opportunities in the VFX industry that span the globe. 


In this forward thinking BA in Visual Effects, you’ll work with us to develop the artistic sensibilities, technical skills, and professional mindset that employers are looking for. You’ll develop your craft in a studio environment equipped with industry-standard kit - from digital cameras and workstations with the latest software, to game engines and virtual production solutions. Guided by specialist tutors with decades of experience in the VFX industry, you'll ask the critical question: what does the future of storytelling look like? 


During your time with us you’ll develop capabilities in visualisation, CG, compositing, motion capture, virtual production, procedural techniques and much more - all supported by current insight into the state-of-play of the VFX industry, and where it is heading. You’ll build storytelling and 3D production skills that apply not just to filmmaking, but are highly transferable to animation, games and other forms of visual entertainment.

The Structure.

BA (Hons) Visual Effects at boomsatsuma adopts a studio-based model that prioritises making, experimentation, and the pursuit of commercial grade images. You’ll learn from experienced VFX professionals, and benefit from the personalised advice and support that comes from learning within a small cohort of students.


Each year you’ll work towards a VFX showreel that demonstrates technique, captures your creative ideas, and supports the next step in your career journey. Along the way you’ll work on a range of projects that explore specific techniques, while focusing intently on storytelling at every step.

Indicative Tools: Adobe Creative Cloud, Maya (Autodesk), Nuke (Foundry), Media Composer (AVID), Resolve (DaVinci), ZBrush (Pixologic), Houdini (SideFX), Unity and Unreal, various other utility tools, and motion capture and virtual production solutions.

The Space.

You’ll be studying in Tobacco Factory, Bristol - a creative and innovative hub in the heart of the city. The building is one of the last survivors from the vast Imperial Tobacco site; saved from demolition by architect George Ferguson.


Today, it is a multi-purpose building that is home to not only boomsatsuma Degrees, but also a lively Cafe Bar, Makers Market, meeting spaces, the offices of several creative organisations, a performing art school. The building is also home to Tobacco Factory Theatres – one of the most exciting performance venues in the country.
