At Boomsatsuma, it’s a given that learning goes well beyond the classroom. We’ve always been directly connected with industry, ensuring what we teach is relevant to the creative sector. We’re particularly proud of our Bristol Film School mentorship programme, which gives our degree students the opportunity to meet and form connections with the people shaping the industry right now. Every final year Filmmaking: Production and Filmmaking: Post Production student is paired with Bristol-based film professionals—directors, producers, DOPs, and other creatives—so they can get unique insight into the industry they are training for.
Throughout the first semester, mentors and mentees meet at an agreed number of times, usually with phone calls or Zoom meetings, giving students valuable insight into how the industry really works—sharing tips on mindset, positioning, and the realities of the creative sector. Mentors can offer a unique perspective on how to approach a project, how to network, and how to spot opportunities. It’s about helping students think like professionals and take control of their own path.
The programme has already led to collaborations, work experience, and even job offers—but that’s not the point. The real value comes from the relationship itself. Students get honest insight from someone who’s been there, done it, and knows the ups and downs of the creative industries.
“The mentor programme has been extraordinarily positive for our students, which we expected to be the case but also for the 50+ Industry professionals who give their time to share honest and personal advice and insight about working in all aspects of Film and Television. Now the scheme is in its third year it has also become clear several of the relationships developed during the module have sustained professionally as students have moved into employment. The underlying ethos is all part of Bristol Film School, Boomsatsuma’s commitment to giving students as much direct engagement with the Industry as possible during their studies.”
Freya Billington, Head of Bristol Film School at Boomsatsuma
The scheme thrives in part due to our educational partnership with Bristol Crew where all members are invited to join the scheme on joining. Bristol Crew was established by Cinematographer Sarah Smither and has provided talented crew to the film, television and media industry for the last 15 years and created a strong and supportive space for local professionals working in that field.
Every year, mentors and mentees come together for a Christmas networking event at the Tobacco Factory. It’s a highlight of the Bristol Film School at Boomsatsuma calendar: a chance to celebrate the year and connect in a relaxed setting.
“Absolutely love to mentor again. It’s not just the students that get a kick out of it!”
Glenn Rainton, Film Editor
The Mentor Programme is a bridge into the world of film. It’s about guidance, insight and connections that last well beyond a single project. By pairing students with the city’s greatest creatives, we’re helping the next generation of filmmakers not just learn, but thrive.
