The Course

This immersive course puts you pitch-side for a future in media, with sport at the centre of everything you do. You’ll be part of a working sports media agency, developing a full set of creative, digital and social media skills you can take into a wide range of careers.

In your first year, you’ll build a broad portfolio and get hands-on with the tools of the trade. Then in year two, you’ll sharpen those skills through meaningful live briefs – working in a real, fast-paced sports agency environment. From capturing match day photography and creating behind-the-scenes video content, to live-streaming, producing match day programmes, and supporting the media needs of teams across the city, this is about learning by doing.

In addition, it also includes an external hard drive, hard drive case, personal SD card for storage of captured film and photography, a Boomsatsuma ‘crew’ t-shirt, and full Adobe Creative Cloud license.

Year 1

Live Radio

An exciting and extremely unique project. Throughout your second project you will learn about the tools, techniques and processes involved in live radio broadcasting. You will also gain experience in and experiment in the field of podcasting. For your second project you will be paired with Bristol Community FM, a local radio station which broadcasts live to 30k listeners a month. You and your classmates will host episodes of Talkin BS, a radio show which was created by graduated Boomsatsuma Sports Media students that is carried on today.

Photography

Begin your sports media journey with photography. Photography is an excellent realm of media to cover in your first project. It allows you to learn and familiarise yourself with camera equipment which can be used later down the road in filmmaking projects. It also allows you to utilise photo editing softwares, concepts and tools from which can be carried over into graphic design work and video editing.

Graphics

Graphics play a large role in sports media, whether these are billboards, posters or flyers designed to sell a product or promote an event. Or displays seen on screen during events such as score cards and lineups. You will cover the range of purposes for graphics within sport and produce your own.

Journalistic Writing

Writing is one of the core pillars of media which covers, influences and shares the world of sports to millions of fans world wide. During this project you will learn about the different writing styles and purposes present within sports media and journalism. This typically is a fan favourite amongst our students as it allows you the opportunity to gush over your favourite sports, teams or athletes.

Post Production Editing

Use post production software and techniques to edit photographs and video for a range of digital platforms and live client briefs

Long and Short Form Documentary

Aside from live sports events, documentaries are some of the longest forms of entertainment we can consume focusing on the sport we are passionate about. During this project you will not only learn the technical aspects of documentary making on both a production and editing front, but you will also learn how to craft a narrative which is compelling and entertaining. Alongside your documentary you will also produce a trailer which encapsulates the character and motivation of your documentary in a condensed form.

Magazine

Utilising much of the learning from year 1 up until this point, you will produce a magazine for your 5th project. Combining your writing skills, graphic skills and photography, you will produce a print worthy piece. For those of you with a journalistic flair, this project is the one for you!

Passion Project Part 1

Most education providers will dictate to you each and every one of your projects, whilst we decide what many of yours are (with wiggle room of course), there is one project we want you to take a lead on. The Passion Project. This project can be what you want it to be. Did you really enjoy the documentary unit and want to produce a longer one? Do you want to create a series of magazines now that you have the skill set to do so? Do you want to create your own photography business?

In year 1 you will plan and pitch your Passion Project to a panel of both staff and students, think Dragons Den. After you have pitched your idea and have approval to move forward, you can start producing your Passion Project. The project will run alongside the course for the remainder of year 1 and all the way through year 2, giving you some serious time to embed yourself in your idea and create something truly worth shouting about.

Progression

As mentioned in the course overview, not only do we want to give you the technical skills required to succeed, we also want to give you the personal skills. In the progression project, alongside working on creative CV’s, cover letters and more, we will also develop your confidence in body language and speech.

Year 2

Live Sports Clothing Brand

What we wear says a lot about us. In your first project of the second year we start off with a fun one. In teams you will design your own sports clothing brand. You will compete against other teams to design the coolest, drippiest and wardrobe worthy clothing brand.

Community Action Project

During your time on the course you will work with well known, big names in the world of sport. That doesn’t mean that we can’t also help the little guy. During your community action project we will team up with a sports organisation or team within Bristol to supply them with all their media needs. We want to tell their story through content they can post in the real world.

Vlogging

Vlogging has exploded in the last 15 years, it is a staple in the world of online sports media. Maybe you watch a couple of vloggers already who attend sporting events and film their experience. During this project, you will become that vlogger. You will produce a series of vlogs which will be posted to your purpose built YouTube channel. Before you start reading about the next project, don’t forget to like and subscribe!

Animation

Typically an under appreciated art form in sports media, even though we see animations everywhere. It might be a transition between camera angles, rotoscoping fun elements around a product in an advert, or even turning your favourite athlete into a cartoon style character. We will explore the purposes and uses of animation in sport and produce our own fun creative outcomes.

LIVE TV Sports Show

“Live” is probably one of the most important words when discussing sport, we all love to watch sport live. If we aren’t watching the sport itself, we are watching live coverage and analysis of the sport. Produce a LIVE TV sports show which will be live streamed on YouTube. This project allows for a large variety of roles to be fulfilled, whether you were born to be on camera, or born to be behind one! There will be a role you can fill in this collaborative project.

Sports Highlight Packages

Highlight videos are some of the most entertaining pieces we can watch aside from the sport itself, we love to see the best moments again and again…and again. We want to relive those moments and reexperience the magic we felt the first time round. In your penultimate project of year 2 you will create sports highlight packages for a variety of purposes and audiences.

Passion Project Part 2

We end year 2 with a bang! All your learning, experiences and growth are channeled into one final outcome, your passion project. This will serve as the culmination of all you have learned over your two years on the Boomsatsuma Sports Media course. When all is said and done, we want this to be the piece of work you are most proud of. When someone asks you “what did you do for two years on a sports media course”, this is what you will proudly show them!
