Our Creative and Digital Media college students headed out this week to see their graphic design work across the city. The unique collaboration with industry partners, and media giants, Bauer Media and local young people’s mental health charity Off The Record, saw selected students’ work chosen to appear in bus stops across the city.
The brief was to champion the work of Off the Record, creating poster designs aimed at young people with a focus on self-care. Working to a live brief meant the students balanced creativity with the realities of professional practice – from responding to a target audience to working within brand guidelines such as colour palettes, fonts and logos.
“Working on briefs set by Bauer Media and Off The Record has been an invaluable experience for the students, and it was great to see how they all brought their own identity into the work. They should all be so proud of their outcomes.”

A judging panel selected 10 students to have their work showcased across the city. For students, the project was a chance to improve upon their graphic design skills and see their ideas taken seriously in a public space.
“As a first year, I haven’t really done much graphic design before, so to have my poster picked to be on bus stops, I was absolutely surprised. Even just working with the client has taught me how that works. I think that’s actually a valuable thing.”

For the group, it was one of many opportunities at Boomsatsuma of creating work for a real client – and seeing that work reach an audience.
The result is a project that not only gave students a taste of professional creative work, but also let them make something meaningful, public-facing and communicate a message that matters to other young people in Bristol – paired with the buzz of seeing their work out in public.
