Bristol Film School by Boomsatsuma has collaborated with Bristol-based visual effects studio Lux Aeterna on the making of their behind-the-scenes documentary.
Students were invited on set to document the production and gain first-hand experience working alongside industry professionals using emerging technologies on their short film RENO.
Developed through MyWorld Creates – a creative technology programme funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) – RENO explores the future of filmmaking through cutting-edge virtual production and machine learning technologies.
The programme supports innovation across film, television, games and immersive media, bringing together industry and education. It offers students the opportunity to push the creative boundaries of future filmmaking, such as virtual production and AI-assisted workflows.
Set within a remote seed bank, RENO follows biotechnologist Dr Imani Njeri as she develops a deep companionship with her personal AGI assistant, RENO, while protecting one of the world’s most vital resources from future threat.
The production was filmed at The MyWorld Coal Shed Studios experimental virtual production stage, with research and development into machine learning forming a key part of the filmmaking process.
The behind-the-scenes documentary was created by BA (Hons) Filmmaking: Production students Grace Groves (Producer), Oli Southall (Camera), Johnny Major and Dexter Hill (Additional Camera), Bradley Kollobani (Sound), and Digital Media Technician Eleanor Kear.
The film was edited by BA (Hons) Filmmaking: Post Production student Ella Carroll, under the supervision of Freya Billington, Head of Bristol Film School by Boomsatsuma.
The Lux Aeterna VFX team also visited the school to speak with students about their roles on the production. The team discussed the creative and technical complexities of both the production and post-production workflows involved.
The session also included a screening of the behind-the-scenes documentary created by Boomsatsuma students, which will accompany Lux Aeterna VFX’s upcoming talks and presentations, most recently showcased at FMX – Film & Media Exchange in Stuttgart.
