Lost and Grounded beer labels of Photography and Print degree students

Our Photography and Print degree students showcased a collaboration at Lost and Grounded this month, with an exhibition hosted inside the Bristol brewery’s taproom.

The show marked the conclusion of a unique commercial brief that challenged Photography and Print students to reimagine the label for Lost and Grounded’s popular Helles lager, complete with advertising campaigns shot both in the studio and on location.

Alongside numerous industry-facing projects Boomsatsuma students are a part of, the Working with Industry module gives them real-world experience of creating work for a live client.

“Working with a client on a live brief was an amazing opportunity that not only gave us insight into working professionally, but also gave us confidence when collaborating with clients. I was inspired by this project because it was unlike anything I had worked on before — seeing everyone’s different concepts come together in the exhibition was incredible.”

Photography and Print student

Students experienced the rigorous planning, teamwork, and time management required in professional creative production. For both Boomsatsuma students and Lost and Grounded’s brewery, it was a toast to what can happen when creative education and industry meet in the spirit of experimentation and craft beer.

With only minimal direction from the brewery, each student crafted an entirely original visual concept, producing sets of images for digital, print, and social media use. The exhibition presented these rebranded cans alongside accompanying campaign photographs projected within the brewery’s taproom.

Photography and Print student, Pippa Reilly, described the project as “an amazing opportunity” to gain professional insight and confidence when working to client expectations.

“Lost and Grounded gave us creative freedom with little to no restrictions,” she explained. “It was inspiring to explore such varied themes and to see everyone’s concepts come to life.”

Pippa’s own campaign, inspired by the “brightness and nostalgia of a summer night out,” incorporated both studio photography and a lively bar-location shoot.

Seeing her design displayed on the actual Helles cans available over the bar during the exhibition, she said, was “an incredible moment.”
