Nature & Wildlife Photography
Joseph Sermon:
“I’ve been attracted to wildlife and nature photography ever since I received my first camera as a birthday present at thirteen years old. I’ve always had a strong connection with nature, which naturally evolved into my passion for wildlife photography. I love the challenge that wildlife photography brings, as the only things I can truly rely on when I’m out shooting are my photographic skills and fieldcraft. I think not having control over your subject really tests your patience, photographic ability and willpower. Many a time I’ve wanted to give up after unsuccessful outings with my camera, but if I’ve learnt anything from wildlife photography it’s that you need to have patience (and a lot of it!).
However when the effort and patience pays off, and everything comes together, it truly is amazing!
I believe every photograph tells a different story, and that’s what I love the most. Each frame shows a unique side to an animal, perhaps one that we don’t always see.
Since coming to boomsatsuma I’ve also found a new love for black-and-white street photography. It creates a certain timelessness feel that forces you to focus on the composition, the way light interacts with the nearby buildings, and the people walking by.
Similarly to wildlife photography, it’s about capturing fleeting moments in the chaos of urban life. Which may be why I’m drawn to it.
It’s the complete opposite of wildlife, yet the patience and awareness it demands are the same.
From what I’ve learnt at boomsatsuma, I’ve been able to try new techniques and photograph areas of Bristol I never would’ve thought to pay any notice to before.
I think that for me, photography, is all about embracing unpredictability and finding interest in places you may think aren’t interesting at first glance.”
